Comment/Slag off at will! I have posed this message on behalf of my father( also Bill Webb)
who was at Gan for 6 months in 58 approx. We were left at RAF Katanayeke Ceylon. He was
casevac'd home in a Valletta (pig) due to a snake bite. The journey in was finished on one engine.
I believe the runway was under construction during his tour. He would have been responsible for
Motor transport servicing and probably got involved in the construction plant to. Back up

outraged at being taxed from Male for services never provided, declared independance
and founded the Suva Divan Republic which basically consisted only of Addu. Do you

Comment/Slag off at will! we were only there to stop the locals from causing trouble and to
show the flag. Whilst we were there we contacted a russian submarine, which was taking photos
of the RAF basethrough his periscope. We then proceeded to chase it out to sea We chased it out
of the lagoon and out to sea, we kept her down for thirty six hours harassing her all the time till
she was really low on oxygen and battery power. We then got orders to disengage and let her go.
However when we reported her to the admiral in charge far east fleet he ordered us to sink it. We
ran in on her and at a range of 200 yards we got check, check check, his order had been overturned
by the RAF. walla in charge Far east operations. I know how close we were to sinking her as I was
operating the range recorder(it fires the squid mortars) and i had to wind it back like hell to stop the
contact being made. Back

Comment/Slag off at will! Having served there before the golf course and other exotic things they
built in later years I can only say those that followed the early 60's had an easy time of it. One thing
that I do remember was the Grand opening of the Astra cinema the film was South Pacific which I
thought was very appropriate at the time. We even had to dress up in collar and tie, with long sleeves
for the event. Really enjoyed the leve to Singapore and Malaya (went back to KL last summer and
what a difference. Given the chance I would go back to Gan tomorrow just to see the changes.
Apparently there is a hotel there now run by a French company. Found this bit of info in my local

a day in the signals minivan, flying in the Shackleton, Sweaty Betty and Leather Heather (sorry ladies),
Wing Co Moss, R & R in Singers, Beer and singing, the shark cage, tea and stickies, the 10 year old
eggs in the mess, the midnight bed bug attacks, cockies running around under the red hot mess toaster,
did I mention the beer? Yes we look back with rose coloured glasses, most of us hated it then as we
were so young with so much to do. Now 30 to 40 years on, of course we would love it. Anyone who

Comment/Slag off at will! You never seem to mention the "Rock's" mind you as we only did the
month's detachment I suppose that does not count as a "tour". I remember flying courtesy of 48
via Butterworth for our trip out to the island, although mine did not last long. Was looking forward to
spending my birthday there, cheap ale & all that rubbish, ended up in S S Q, flew back to Changi
with a duff appendix after only four days there. Last time I saw Gan was on the way back Casavac
1965, via Comet 4b, did not off load was strapped to a stretcher, only person I saw from Gan was
another guy who was Fire that I had served with at St Mawgan. Want to go back to Changi first
before I revisit Gan. Just think we got there for nothing!!! Now it costs a bloody fortune. Good Luck

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! What a great website!
Martin Futcher asks whether anyone else remembers the events of Christmas Eve 1965.
Well, I'm the Brian Mott who ventured with him and Trevor Calvert on that lunatic expedition to
Bushey Islet, in an old dhoni that eight of us had bought for £24, but had not managed to fix the
steering gear before we set off! Following our exhausting return, Martin and Trevor went on to
the Christmas Eve celebrations; I grabbed my bike and went to work (where I should have arrived
three or four hours earlier for a 1900-2300 evening shift) to face my boss, who I found pacing the
office floor, believing that we had been swept out into oblivion through the Wilingili Gap. Then it
was I who was introduced to the irate CO, directing 'rescue' operations in the Marine Craft
Control Room, to be told what I already knew: that I was "a bloody fool".
Thirty five years later, in January 2001, when scaling an anemometer mast at London Luton Airport,
I mentioned to the Tels engineer who was escorting me, that the first time I climbed 30 feet to get
at a wind system was on a little island in the Indian Ocean. He said: "It wasn't Gan, was it?" It turned
out that he had bee Buccaneer ground crew on HMS Eagle when that vessel and HMS Arc Royal
staged a mock attack on Gan, on their wat to southern Africa during the Rhodesian crisis. What a
small world! I clearly remember that day and night; we thought WW3 had started.
Other unforgettable events during my tour included the spectacular landings of British Eagle's
'Endeavour' - transforming the golf course into a ploughed field; and the ex-Masirah Canberra that
spent hours circling the island, burning off excess fuel before executing a brilliant landing - without a
nose wheel - to the applause of the whole island's population.
The Gan experience was fantastic, and I was lucky enough to celebrate my 21st birthday in No2 Mess.

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! I wish I had read all the comments from previous signatories
of your Visitor's Book before I made mine.
Do any civies or "blue or brown jobs" remember the 3 NZ lads who arrived at Gan in their trimaran
during 1966. They were young guys taking 2 years off after Uni before starting work!! Arrived at
Gan having run out of food & water with their boat in some state of disrepair. We in No 2 Civilian
Mess accommodated them for a week while the local sail-maker repaired their sails. That was a good
week, much drinking out on the trimaran in the lagoon in the evenings. Their plan was to sail west to the
coast of Africa then up to Suez & into the Med where they hoped to sell their boat in the S of France -
failing that, carry on to UK & try their luck again.
I wonder where they are now? I think one had done Law, another maybe Medicine, don't know about
the third.
Does anyone else remember the events of Christmas Eve 1965, when Trevor Calvert, Brian Mott &
myself sailed to Bushy Is for the day - & nearly didn't make it back! We managed to get back over the
reef mid-evening just as the S&R launch was setting off to look for us.
The S&R Shack was u/s (no radar) at the time. I remember the current C.O. was informed of our
being missing whilst at his Christmas Party & he was not best pleased. We were the talk of "2 Mess"
that Christmas I can tell you.
Another event well remembered was the football World Cup Final. I was on duty that night, listening
to it on radio. Couldn't believe that German equalizer right on the stroke of full time. But the final outcome
was worth waiting for.
How about the Boeing 707 tanker en route from Djibouti to Jakarta (or visa versa) which only
just made it on take off. John Kneale (Radio-sonde)& myself were at the end of the runway watching
it wave hop for what seemed ages.

Comment/Slag off at will! Please add Met Office to the "section list" above. Many hundreds of UK
Met staff served their 12 months on Gan. I would imagine most enjoyed it, few hated it, but like just
about ALL the staff ever posted there, look back on Gan as something a bit out of the ordinary. I
certainly enjoyed my year there & altho' I ticked off the days on the calendar, like most, the 12 months
soon went. What a shame it costs so much to go there now. To think we were paid to serve there
when many would have gladly paid much to be in our positions. Back up

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! You know... I'm a bit perverted hence "would you go back
for a holiday?" the answer would be YES. Crazy but it was only in the last few months that I
appreciated the island, it's sea and shore and the locals. The Pakistanis taught me to make curry,
the locals taught me how NOT to kill a chicken (too slow a death poor sods... but they did make
a great curry) and snorkelling. I really miss that.Oh, the Bollywood films and M'hamed Raffi the

Comment at will! Well I've been reading the guest book and I can't help thinking. You didn't all really
like Gan as much as you seem to be saying. Has time made u all forget? An island about 3 X 2 miles,
no town, little chance to visit other islands, 700 men, one (elderly) female, 12 months there and only
2 weeks leave. Not much to do except get pissed or go to the flicks. Okay so the swimming was
good and the sunsets superb, but most people there couldn't wait for repat. Back up

far worse postings than Gan!)
Yes! I guess you are right, it was indeed unique. I always though
Gan was a bit like an aircraft carrier, which in itself must make it unique amongst RAF bases.
In fact I was there when the Ark Royal itself visited Gan. I think if my memory serves me right there
was about 700 RAF (plus some civies)on the island but when the Ark Royal came there was about
3000 blokes on that ship. They just about took the place over, you couldn't get in the 180 Club for
matlots, drinking Gin out of pint pots. Anyone else there then???? Back up

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! What a brilliant idea, to have a site that brings back so many
hangovers!
Christmas 1967 - sleeping in a boat outside the Marine Bar; the pile 'em high can contests; pinching
the road roller from outside the Sgts Mess and driving it drunkenly, with Al Hatten (a sooty), all the
way to the Marine Bar for another beer;Taff Roberts demonstrating how the Omega watch he saved
for months for could survive having a concrete block dropped on it. It couldn't - great sobering-up ploy,
though;dropping the Hastings on the pan for crash practice - who forgot to drain the oil tanks?; having my
name painted on the buckled prop andhung in the Marine bar;finally escaping to Singapore.

In touch with a manufacturer but before I can go further would like to find out if anyone has the

Secondly and most imprtantly, if anyone interested in the tie can you please e-mail me so I can get

I'm sure you know, but a picture of the tie is on the picture gallery page under 'general' look forward

Comment/slag off at will! Although I am sure everyone had negative feelings of some kind while
on the island, we have a knack of remembering only the positive, for me that was the comradery,
the card games, Tiger beer, the 180 Club, The Beach Bar, The Marine Bar, the bowling alley,
the billet bars at xmas and getting rat arsed with Karl Denver. the 2 weeks in Singapore, the
boozy Moral Leadership course in the Cameron Highlands. Did I waste my 12 months on the island?

Comment/slag off at will! Not a proper man 0'Gan but in 1969-1970 I was Cargo Officer in Changi.
After several trips to Gan to see friends, we set up a direct ordering service for Hi-Fi etc to save the
Gannites having to pay exhorbitant extra costs the NAAFI in Singapore had added for "Transport costs"
- Quite a cheek when their goods went via on our own truckie fleet! In 1974 I was OC blanket stacking
and fuels on a tour in Masirah and the powers that be in Cyprus decided that we could not visit Cyprus for
mid-term R&R. (They had a little trouble with the Turks) So we fixed up a trip to Gan. ostensibly to see
Gan's methods of ship-to-shore refuelling, but mainly for a week long vacation. Good old Gan. The
difference between Gan and Masirah was that Gan had everything and some people didn't use the facilities
they had whereas Masirah had nothing, but it was in use all the time! A great website about a special place.

like to return but cannot find it in the brochures. Fond memories but the gozome charts remind me
of the living hell it really was.I have a video of the film made by Anglia TV in 69 anybody want a

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! I was in the Motor Transport Section. My job was to organise
transport on the daily running on the Island. I drove Princess Margaret and Princess Alexandria
when they visited. My staff would teach the local Islanders to drive, and I had to pass them for
a licence. Once I had to visit one of the Islands and was driven by the Chief of the Island. I will
never forget that ride. He used first gear only and most of you know what the roads were like on
other Islands. How many of you remember 'The Good Shepherd' Group Captain Shepherd?.

Comment/Slag off at will! Gan was surely the best unaccompanied tour that I did whilst in the RAF.
I was somewhat rushed out there from 11mu to take over from a Flt. Lt. who had to come home
one month early for compassionate reasons, thus I spent 13 months there looking after the BFI, Tech
Stores and offloading oil tankers. My other duty was Officer i/c Radio Gan, a most fulfilling job.
I ran 3 programmes, Jazz Hour, Classical Hour, and Letters From Home, all of which I thoroughly
enjoyed. My other "duty" was sitting next to the inimitable George Caird at the Mess bar, George looked
after the tanker in the lagoon, the Wave Ruler, I think it was.
Although my tour at Gan was followed by an accompanied tour at Akrotiri and I had several other
overseas tours, Labuan, Changi, etc., nothing can ever compare to Gan. Happy, happy days.
I am still serving, but now with the United Arab Emirates AF & AD, after spending 12 years in SOAF.
I have a 9 month and a 12 month "No Nookie" tie, but both are well worn and require replacement, so
I will certainly buy another if I am able.

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! Many memories. Seeing these pages and all the photos. Many
hours spent swimming, snorkeling, bubblying, riding the bike around the island. RUNNING
AROUND THE ISLAND. Playing volleyball outside the block, playing rugby. Hours spent by
the fence of the Blue Lagoon gazing longingly at the women staging through. Getting absolutely
legless. Curries and the open air cinema. Astra cinema and shouts of 'Siggy, Siggy, Siggy,
Wank, wank, wank' etc. Not forgetting the 'Spanner wankers' of course. The easter time dhoni race
and the bike race down the main runway on Christmas day 1973 - the Fire section had an unfair
advantage, they had a fire engine half way down, hosing everyone else down. Some of the guys
and locals caught a blue marlin, I took a photo of it and it went in the RAF News.
I also enjoyed trips in 1125 MCU craft when I did some 'WOPing' on the 'Dr Knox' tests. Also met
a lot of the lads from CCS from 1970/1971. Where are you all now???
Oh, mustn't forget the mug of tea and the toast in the afternoons. LUXURY.

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! Very good memories. Went back in 1992 to fix a small
wind-finding radar, Met Office still the Met Office - stayed in Ocean reef club (old Sergeants
Mess - room had showers `grafted on' slope on floor meant water went into room rather than
down plug!) A lot of the island reverted to `jungle' - Fazil Road quite overgrown - old Radio Sonde
area difficult to find so overgrown (it was next to Dog Section). Remember good relations with
MT - once got the JU upto 65 on the M1! Gozomies, orange & lemonade from Golf Club bar whilst
working on weather radar, `pink' milk & pasties. Astra cinema, cries at start of programme (Siggy
Siggy, Spot the Dog, MCU W--k! lights dimming if female (AQMs) in audience - lots, lots more!!

Well done! Back up

Comment/ Slag off at will! Great site.Lots of good memories. I went back in 1992.The Marine
Bar is still standing, all the chalk graffiti was still plainly legible on the rafters, this after 16 years!
Fairly easy to travel there, although you will probably stay on another atoll (the one I stayed on,
was at the top of the chain. Half of the staff on my holiday island were ex-Gan employees. They
recognised me immediately. Well off to the cinema, Siggie Siggie Siggie , you know the rest!

in the cinema. Did a bit for Radio Gan, helped decorate the winning billet bar at Xmas '74

shiny new flip-flops in the Marine Bar - happy days, eh! I have slides and bits'n'bobs if of any help.

Comment/slag off at will! Alistair,
Very nice to speak to you last night. There is so much to talk about. After we spoke I went into the
archives and retrieved the album of negatives and sat up till gone midnight looking through them.
I have just about every section in a section by section photo shoot, unfortunately they mainly have
no identification other than the likes of SAS, Police and Air Traffic which was taken in the tower.
I'll definately have to set up a large website and put them all on. I don't know if you have come across
the RAF Heraldry Trust. I have been watching this site with interest since it was first set up and have
been in touch with them on a number of occassions. The link is http://www.griffon.clara.net/rafh/heraldry.htm
I am interested in a number of badges, but today I have sponsored the Station Badge for RAF Station Gan.
It is one of the many badges that is awaiting sponsorship and to this end I was wondering if you could
add a link to your site and pass the info on to any others. Have you also thought of having a NEWS page
that snippets can be added to from time to time?
I'm going to add this info to the Guest book.

Comment/slag off at will! I go to the gan island quite often, because I am from Hithadhoo.
When the RAF Gan was there I was a very little kid. My father and some of my uncles used to work
there. (I don't know where) According to them the beauty of the real RAF Gan is not there anymore.
But still there are some memories of RAF Gan is left and it is so nice for the people of our age to see
those places as a historical memory of our Atoll. Back up

Comment/Suggest/Slag off at will! Before I saw Gan I heard Gan! Fighter Jets and various
kinds of Air Crafts landing and taking off regularly broke my sleep at night when I was a small child.
My first trip to Gan was to attend classes held at The Education Center for children. I was about 8
or 9years of age at that time.
Since then I began to visit Gan for some reason or other. I hanged around the Education Center most
of the time, and later found a job at Medical Center as a an assistant boy in the Treatment Room and
Drug Store(Pharmacy).
After few years I moved around from one job to another, untill I landed in Photographic Section of SASF,
Engineering Squadron Headquarters.
I was trained there as a Station Photographer by Cpl. Hildritch, Paul, Cpl. Brown, and Cpl. Brian
Lawrence.I learned to take Black & White and Colour photographs and process and print them within a
short notice.
At the sametime I attended to the GCE O,level classes held for Airmen at Education and Vocational
Training Center. I was studying Phyisics, Maths, Electricity and Electronics and Art. I got Cambrige
O'level Certificate in Maths only. I had no time to sit other exams before the British leave Gan.
I learned in Gan the value of dicipline and punctuality. The training had helped me to get an opportunity
to serve my government as a photographer to the President.
Now I am a pensioner, but am still working in photographic field. Back up

Happy memories of staging through on countless occasions and the Blue Lagoon.
And finally, whats this about frogs and the game of dots ? Jeff Mays.

Comment/slag off at will! I have enjoyed my visits to your site. Though I never did serve in Gan I
feel as if I wished I had now. Good luck with your site and its much improved background. Most
of the pics are stunning and I like the graphics too. One thing puzzles me though. If you are not
ex-RAF, why RAF Gan? :-). BTW banner links are now on my site...main page and links page ...

time the posting was considered almost as bad as Colchester,I understand that after the construction
of the camp was completed life improved.I do have contact with bods who served during this period

Comment/slag off at will! Like another visitor did the sand tour in Masirah, however cannot forget
the faces of our first tour guys on a football visit to Gan. Not only was it green, but it rained as well,
and one could buy ice cream from a kiosk. My Ganite friends still insist on telling me it was a hard tour.
