RAF Gan Reunion 2003 |

The small (1" high) enamel pin badge shown above records the fact the
RAF had been present on Hittadu and Gan from 1942 until 1976. Only 300
of these badges were produced especially for the Reunion and are absolutely
unique. We have a limited number of these for sale at £5 each
including postage and packing. If you would like to purchase the above, then please send a cheque, made
payable to: M Butler at 8
Rashleigh Court, Church Crookham, Fleet, Hants, GU52 8UQ. Orders
will be treated strictly on a first come, first served, basis.
The money raised from the sale of these badges will go directly to the
National Thalassaemia Centre in Male, Maldives.
"Note: The RAF first had a presence on Hittadu in 1942 when a
detachment of RAF personnel were sent from China Bay in
Ceylon to service and turn around the RAF Sunderland and Catalina
aircraft that were flying regularly into the Addu Atoll lagoon.
It was on the 29th March 1976 that the RAF staging post on
Gan closed down and the island was handed back to the
Maldivian Goverment." |

"All the members of the RAF Gan Reunion Committee would
like to thank all those who have sent us messages of congratulations and
thanks regarding the recent Reunion at RAF Odiham Your comments were very much
appreciated. It is great to realise that the efforts that we have made over
the past year or so have given so much pleasure. Thank you all."

" Well, a great time had by all I think! It was wonderful
to see your faces at last! Before, I just knew a lot of you from your email
address, but here you were in all your ugly glory!
I was stunned to receive the Gan shield as you could probably tell from when
I had to give a speech! Totally unexpected!
I felt a bit embarrassed on the day being praised to the eyeballs. I would
like to point out that my part of the Reunion organization was VERY small. The
vast part, about 97% in my estimation, was done by Mike Butler
and family, Mick Hall and the very capable RAF Odiham crew, and
Bruce Hepburn.
It is impossible to describe just how much work went into making it all
happen, and unless I saw it for myself, I wouldn't believe it either! I would
like to add my heartfelt thanks here to the parties above concerned for a
great day, it really couldn't have happened without you."

Dear All,
Many thanks once again for getting this web site & reunion underway.
Thoroughly enjoyable afternoon & to meet old friends from over 30
years ago was incredible.
I'm an ex RAF Halton brat (101 entry) & will be attending a
triennial
beer-up at Halton next year. I hope my liver can cope with these so
called social functions.
So when's the next one? Can't wait.
Best Regards,
Setch |
Dear RAF Gan Reunion
Committee
Just a short note from the depths of Rowlands Castle to thank you
and your Committee for the exceptional organisation of the Gan
Reunion Day on Saturday. I can only guess at the amount of work
which must have preceded the actual day but know from previous
involvement in such events that the amount of minutiae is enormous
and often unappreciated by those such as myself who just 'turn up'
on the day! Managed to speak to several people about their own
experiences on the island although the only person I met up with who
was present during my year (1961-1962) was Eddie Wooffitt,
Postmaster General - we managed to dredge up a few shared
memories! Both Rosemary and I enjoyed the event very much indeed -
please pass on our best wishes and thanks to the Committee - can we
look forward to another Reunion at some date in the future? Best
Regards Mike Ridge |
Thank you very much
for organising the RAF Gan re-union which I thoroughly enjoyed. It
was great to see so many and meet up with so many ex Gannites.
Please pass on my thanks to the others in the organising committee
and to the Mess staff. You all did a very splendid job, thank you.
Cheers

reunion a great success. Lyel Swingler |
Outstanding reunion,
and outstandingly organised. Thank you for your own, and
your family's, unstinting efforts to make it the success it was - it
will go
down in history I'm sure.
There was even Tiger!!!

great to meet friends who I had not seen for 43 years and to talk
about old times.
Thanks once again

Just a very quick
note to say thank you again for organising the superb Reunion at
Odiham.
It really was great to meet so many old friends, not only from Gan
but others that I haven't met for even longer. I last met Ray Morgan
at RAAF Butterworth over forty years ago.Right must go as have to
complete this work before we leave for the Far East in the morning.
Will definitely be going to Gan for a holiday though Thank you
all once again. Cheers and beersDick Harcourt

too young--i actually had my 21st in Gan 29th June 1975--thanks
again--perhaps you could pass on our thanks the the other
organisers. I still have lots of pictures to send--of Gan in 1975--

Just to say A GREAT
BIG THANK YOU , we had a most wonderful day.
To meet and greet pals was just great, the venue could not have been
better
the organisation was perfect to the last detail.
For all your hard work and enthusiasm Thanks a million.

A very big thank you
to you and everyone else for what was a great day last Saturday.
Having been involved in such events myself I know that they just do
not happen - they have to be worked on. It was very clear that a lot
of work had gone into this one and everyone I spoke to was full of
praise for the detail you had gone into and the organisation of the
day. I met a number of old colleagues and the couple I had been
best man to and have not seen for 32 years!
Very well done and a big thank you from me.

Many congratulations
on the total success of the Gan Reunion. I thought it was a
masterpiece of imaginative planning: the right setting, superb
displays, a splendid meal and stimulating company. It was a joy to
see again my Gannite contemporaries and to meet many others who
experienced the uniqueness of the coral island. I know the hard
slog of producing this sort of show. It is, much appreciated. My
warm thanks to you and your family and to the other members of the
committee.
Very best wishes
Yours aye

So good to meet up
with a group of people who all have something in common - being ex
Gannites- we are a unique bunch and proud of it. Thank you
committee for all the hard work, it was well worth it, and from all
the comments I heard, everyone else thought so as well.A
thoroughly enjoyable evening and a good get together.
Thanks again.

Just to thank you and
your colleagues for your hospitality last Saturday and for giving us
the opportunity to promote the Shackleton Association at such an
excellent venue. RAF Odiham certainly came up with the goods.
Both Peter and I were very impressed with the entire day and know
the amount of effort you must have put in to make the reunion such a
success. I am sure that everyone present must have enjoyed the event
and the opportunity to catch up with old friends and comrades.
Keep up the good work.
With very best regards
Tony Raybole |
To all Thank you
for a thoroughly enjoyable day, how hard you all worked was very
evident. Not aware of any adverse comments...
Sorry Anna & I were not able to be that active leading up to it. Catch up
another day.

Sorry we did not get
to meet on Saturday, guess like me you were too busy chatting to old
acquaintances. A great day which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to
you and your 'helpers' for working so hard to make the day a success

Can I thank all of
you hard working Gannites for a superb reunion afternoon and
evening. I have been to a number of reunions, mainly ex RAF
Photographers but this was without a doubt the best. |
