Equator Island
where we stayed is basic no frills, but clean and food is good.
Lots of fish dishes and curries, the chief will even make up a
Maldivian curry specially for you, it is quite hot.
On Gan is the old Royal Air Force base, which Equator island
resort has converted from the sergeants mess areas.
There are several small beaches. with loungers along the sides,
a nice swimming pool with children's area.
Gan is linked to three other islands by road way, look on Google
earth. You have free bicycle hire at equator dependant on your
holiday company, we went with Cosmos - is/was the cheapest
holiday company - not worth going with Kuoni etc as you get
exactly the same for more money plus have to pay for certain
trips which were included with Cosmos.
The scuba diving is excellent with a wreck called British
Loyalty, the snorkelling is good to. We saw mantas and eagle
rays, beautiful fish, loads of turtles. If you are into
snorkelling go on the snorkel trips, twice daily.
It is so different from the Maldives you know or have heard
about, you actually meet the locals - this I love to do - they
are very friendly. We ate out a couple of times at the local
cafes very cheap, less than £4 for buffet style meal with drinks
(tea/coffee/soft drinks - no alcohol as they are Muslims,
alcohol freely available at hotel) that was for two of us!!
Regards
Yvonne
