Well not exactly Mandalay But very much east of Suez. Hi, Have just found your web site after visiting Gan in March 2007 as a holiday treat for my 70th Birthday. Lots of changes, from when I was there in 1965. The island is scheduled to be come an international airport late this year, The  sergeants mess now a three star hotel with a massive swimming pool and lots of Germans on all the pool side chairs. Many of the old airmen's billets are inaccessible, (I was not allowed to go and look for mine even though I could see it on Google Earth) Same went for the NAAFI and Mess Hall. Sad to say the War Memorial and the Brass RAF Gan sign look very sad in front of a derelict SHQ and the concrete cannons are falling apart.

Parts of the island are used for Maldivian army and police training, a large part is taken over by the new buildings for the international airport. I did manage to find the ASTRA cinema now derelict. My pride and joy was the golf course, as head (and only) green keeper. Some of you will remember the British Eagle, Photo enclosed, that ended up on the ninth green, and also the Canberra that landed without a nose wheel and managed to come to a complete halt before gently kissing the concrete. Well sad to say the golf course is now apparently an assault course, oh well, Happy days! Photos enclosed, more available.

Cheers, Martin Birch
